G'day all.
I've encountered a problem and I'm not too sure which newsgroup is more relevant, so I'll post it here.
Whenever I try to use Hibernate the computer restarts telling me that it did not shutdown properly. This happens every time. I don't know if there is a setting that I'm supposed to enable or not, and it's got me stumped.
It may tie in with another problem that I have found. In Device Driver, it tells me that I have an unknown device. I can't figure out what the device maybe, as I seem to be able to account for all of my hardware devices. So I was thinking that maybe it's something to do with the motherboard drivers.
My system is: AMD Athlon 3000+ Gigabyte 7VM400AM-RZ motherboard 1 Gig ram 2 x 120gb Seagate h/drives - using IDE mode at the moment not RAID 250mb Radeon 9550 DVD drive + DVD burner
I would be greatful for any help.
Graham

Problem with Hibernate
I would disable the "unknown" item in device manager.
Have you installed any software lately? Did you have to force XP compatibility for it? Does it seem like it would install device drivers?
I installed Pinnacle Studio 10 and it has hosed my machine, it takes forever(5-10 mins) to try to go into hibernate and then can not not come out of hibernate do to "issues" It seems to drop my USB bus during this period...so I have a PS2 keyboard to allow me to get past the screen that asks me if I want to try again, or drop all saved info..

In other threads on here it has turned out be something like the game port on an audio card, and such items. Don't worry too much about it since a lot of beta drivers only provide basic functionality.
If you want to identify the device, right click on it and choose properties and then the Details tab. Post back the device ID if a Google search doesn't turn up anything. When searching, use the middle part of the ID.

The unknown device was present after the initial installation, so I know that it is not due to anything that I've installed. When I realised that I couldn't identify what it was I did disable it.
I'm just hoping that I can get an answer about the Hibernate problem. I prefer Hibernate to Sleep.
Thanks for the response.
Graham.

Ok. The unknown device turns out to be the Joystick Port. Thanks for the tip.

As a follow up to my own post.
In the Performance Ratings and Tools screen it actually tells me that certain drivers are causing my computer to go into Sleep and Hibernate slowly. (This is not quite true as Sleep takes effect immediately, whereas Hibernate crashes the computer.)
There are actually two drivers listed.
The first is ATIKMDAG.SYS which is the ATI Radeon kernel driver for the graphics card.
The second is ACPI.SYS. This driver appears to have two problems associated with it. The VIA Rhine Ethernet Adapter and the AMD K7 Processor.
So just a little digging around on my part would have given me the answers I was looking for. Now to find the solutions - if they exist.
Thanks Zapper and Colin for taking the time to respond to my intial post. Colins suggestion resolved a different issue.
